Ultimate Secondary School

Six years, forty periods a week, one examination that asks for all of it.

Ultimate Secondary is a day school in Ikeja for JSS1 through SS3. Science, arts and commercial streams from SS1, taught by subject specialists in the rooms the subjects need.

SS2 Science, as timetabled

Not a sample. This is the shape of the week a student in the science stream sits, with the double periods where the practicals are.

Weekly timetable for SS2 Science: five days by six periods.

Scroll the grid for Thursday and Friday

Two doubles a week per science subject, because a practical that has to be packed away at the bell is a demonstration.

Choosing at the end of JSS3

Three streams, chosen once, and the choice is made with a form teacher who has taught the student for three years — not from a list on a noticeboard.

Science

Physics, Chemistry, Biology, with Further Mathematics for those who will need it. Two laboratories, and a technician who prepares them — the reason practicals happen in the week they are timetabled.

Goes on to: medicine, engineering, the sciences.

Arts

Literature, Government, History, CRS or IRS, with Yoruba or French. The debating society is not an extracurricular here; it is where the Government syllabus is argued rather than recited.

Goes on to: law, the humanities, international relations.

Commercial

Financial Accounting, Commerce, Economics. Taught with the ledgers and the statements, so a student who leaves at SS3 can keep a set of books, and one who goes on has met the vocabulary already.

Goes on to: accountancy, business, economics.

Admissions

Entry is at JSS1 and, where places exist, at SS1. The entrance examination is in English and Mathematics, and it is written here on a Saturday morning in the second term.

Every candidate who sits it is seen with a parent afterwards, whatever the result. A school that admits a child should be able to say why, and one that does not should be able to say that too.
